Having a healthy curiosity has always helped him throughout his childhood and adult life -- to the point where he can even reassemble half the things he pulls apart. Stephen, or 'Steve' to his friends has been gainfully employed at IBM for the past 16 years. However, it should be noted that none of his statements, posts, opinions, etc, have no relation to his job -- a job he loves very much most of the time.

Playing with Drones

There’s always been something that I’ve wanted to do, and one of those is designing and making a drone.  I thought, maybe it could be a heli based drone, but quadcopters seem to be the most practical way to do something simple without too much complexity.

Of course, there are a lot of people out there who have created some pretty functional drones already, and it’s hard to come up with something unique to do.

So I have an idea — what if I made a micro indoor UAV?  Something that is tracked and controlled by a central computer using real time image recognition and a certain amount of spacial awareness?

It might be neat to make a little indoor companion drone that can automatically greet visitors to my place, or welcome me home, or just fly around at random like a bird — minus the constant pooping.

I’m going to have to give this some thought…  Wonder if anyone has successfully done this at home themselves….

Picked up a new toy…

A couple weeks ago, I picked up a Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless Edition, and some points that anyone looking to buy this truck should know…

  • If you go straight to 6S, you need to make sure your slipper clutch isn’t set too tight.
  • Always check your drive shafts for play before and after running your E-Maxx.
  • If you’re looking for 6S lipo, I would recommend picking up packs from  You can get them fast, and for nearly a quarter of the price of the official Traxxas Packs.  Just note that you don’t get the same warranty or replacement policy as Traxxas’.

After a few runs, it seems I blew a bearing in the rear differential, and it partially stripped the pinion and spur gears.  New parts are on order.

to be continued….

1st post in a long time

IMGP0019So I’ve finally decided that I want to get my personal blog up and running once again.  I had started some time ago, but then some script kiddies got the best of my hosting provider and it’s taken some years to get started again.

I’ll try logging some of my personal projects here, along with whatever thoughts I wish to post.  It’ll take some time to build up a worth while page, but that’s half the fun, right?

I finally decided to get started once again, because, well, I want to build a couple of plugins and a better responsive theme for WordPress than you’d typically find on the market.   Not because I think the ones out there are terrible, only that they’re not what I want.

So that’s it — not much of a first post, but how much boring speak do you wish to see here anyways?
